MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE 1) – At least 12 people died and seven were wounded in an ambush in Lanao del Norte on Thursday afternoon.
Adnani Manamparan, daughter of Nunungan Mayor Abdul Malik Manamparan, died in the attack, which took place in Barangay Malaig, Nunungan, Lanao del Norte. Mayor Manamparan, meanwhile, was wounded.
Manamparan, his relatives and supporters were on their way home from a campaign sortie on board a dumptruck when they were attacked by unidentified armed men.
In an interview on DZMM, Lanao del Norte Police Provincial Director Senior Superintendent Gerardo Rosales said they suspect the motive for the attack was “rido” or a clan war, as they were told that the Manamparan family had a clash with another clan.
According to Rosales, the Manamparan family said they have suspicions as to who was behind the ambush.
The injured were brought to hospitals in Lala, Lanao del Norte and Iligan City.
The initial list of the wounded that were brought to Iligan is as follows:
1. Mayor Abdul Malik Manamparan
2. Haniea Amerah Manamparan
3. Wilfredo Vega (driver)
4. PO1 Frenel Laguting
According to the police, though they have an initial list of those who died in the attack, they still have to verify their identities.
Manamparan is seeking election as vice mayor or Nunungan, while his son Abdul Malik, Jr. is running in the mayoralty race. – From a report by Ronnie Enderes, Regional Network Group and DZMM
