A magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit off the northern coast of Chile at a depth of 21 miles, the U.S. Geological Survey said Sunday.
The quake, at 2:16 p.m. local time, was centered 40 miles northwest of Iquique, the USGS said. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said no tsunami was expected.
A second quake, a 5.1 at almost the exact same location, followed 10 minutes later.
Chilean authorities said they ordered a preventive evacuation of part of the northern coastline.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
